The Georgia Department of Veterans Service is saddened to learn of the death of retired Army Colonel and American Ex-POW Ben Prucell, who was a member (1998-2003) and chairman (2001-02) of the State Veterans Service Board. Col. Purcell was a veteran of Korea and Vietnam and was held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam from Feb. 8, 1968, to March 27, 1973. The Georgia native died Tuesday in Clarkesville. He was 85.
In the summer of 2000, Purcell spoke to Sara Clark, editor of the Georgia Veterans Bulletin, about his experience as a POW in Vietnam and adjusting to life after his return to freedom. That story is reproduced below.
