This week the Georgia Department of Veterans Service and the Georgia Building Authority oversaw a project relocating a monument honoring Georgia veterans of the Vietnam War.
The monument was relocated to the Pete Wheeler Georgia War Veterans Memorial Plaza in front of the Floyd Veterans Memorial Building. It was moved from its former location, at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Trinity Avenue near the State Capitol Building in downtown Atlanta, due to the construction of a new parking deck. The new location will make the monument more visible to passers-by.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5456 in Elberton, Georgia donated the granite monument in 1979. It is believed to be the first state memorial to Georgia’s Vietnam War era veterans.
A ceremony will be held later this year to re-dedicate the monument.
