The Georgia Department of Veterans Service is saddened to report the death of Ray Hendrix, a member of the Veterans Service Board since 2001.

Mr. Hendrix served 42 years in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1992 at the rank of Sergeant Major. He was appointed to the Veterans Service Board by Gov. Roy Barnes in 2001 and later reappointed by Gov. Sonny Perdue in 2008 and by Gov. Nathan Deal in 2015. He served three terms as board chairman (2005-06, 2009-10, and 2013-14).

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ray Hendrix,” said Commissioner Mike Roby. “Ray was greatly admired within the Georgia veterans community for his leadership and dedication. We have lost a great advocate and friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Mr. Hendrix, a resident of Statesboro, was also an active member of the American Legion, having served in several leadership posts at local, state, and national levels. He is survived by his wife, Mary; three children; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7. Both will be held at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home, 502 Miller Street Extension, Statesboro.
