Since their dedications, Georgia’s veteran memorial cemeteries in Milledgeville and Glennville have held annual remembrance ceremonies in honor of Georgia’s fallen sons and daughters.

On Monday, May 27, 2019, both of Georgia’s state veteran memorial cemeteries will continue this unbroken tradition as they host public Memorial Day programs to remember and honor the service and sacrifices of Georgia’s veterans.

“We are blessed to have a military composed of men and women ready to complete the parameters of every mission,” said GDVS Commissioner Mike Roby. “Just as America’s sons and daughters who served before them, these brave men and women remain committed, dedicated and ready to pay any price – including the price of their own lives – to keep America and Georgia safe.”

The 11 a.m. program in Milledgeville, hosted by cemetery director Linda Lavender, will feature keynote remarks from local state Representative Rick Williams. Local musician Briana Wilson will provide patriotic music, including the National Anthem. The Robins Air Force Base Honor Guard will present the Nation’s Colors.

Members of the John Milledge Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will provide a 21-gun salute using muskets in honor of Georgia’s military lost over the last year.

Lavender invites the public to come out and assist in laying flags on all graves beginning Wednesday, May 22.

In Glennville, cemetery director Ernie Cowart will host the cemetery’s 12th annual Memorial Day Ceremony featuring the support of Fort Stewart’s 3rd Infantry Division. Headquarters Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Luke Richards will deliver the ceremony’s keynote address and the Division Band will provide the music.

The ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. with a welcome from Glennville Mayor Chris Roessler. Members of local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars chapters will close the ceremony with a flag raising in honor of all of Georgia’s fallen service members.
