A two-day conference focusing on women’s health and wellness is scheduled to take place in Warner Robins, Friday and Saturday, June 7 - 8, at the Georgia Veterans Education Career Transition Resource Center on South Armed Forces Blvd (31088).

Hosted by the Women Veterans Office of the Georgia Department of Veterans Service, “Life After the Military” brings together state and federal agencies, as well as local non-profit organizations, who provide services targeted to the unique needs of women veterans transitioning into civilian life.

“Women who served our country in the military are strong and heroic, but their contributions have been under-recognized, often by the veteran herself,” notes GDVS Commissioner Mike Roby. “We recognize the challenges of readjustment to post-military life affect women differently than men.” Commissioner Roby will bring insight to the importance of the GDVS Women Veteran Office in his welcome to conference attendees scheduled for Friday (6/7/19) at 3 p.m.

“The unique needs of women veterans are varied and complex, spanning all aspects of health care, eradication of sexual assault, employment, finance, housing, and social issues,” points out Patricia Ross, VECTR’s Chief Operating Officer and the Chairwoman of the State Veteran Service Board. Ross served 25 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in October 2014 at the rank of Colonel.

Friday’s agenda will also include interactive events focused on personal health and wellness lead by local holistic groups. American Legion Post 594 on Moody Road in Warner Robins will host a meet and greet later that evening from 7 - 9 p.m.

Saturday’s packed agenda includes panels focused on women’s health issues lead by the Central Alabama Women Veterans Health Committee and a women’s resource panel including participants from the GDVS Appeals Division and the women coordinators from VETLANTA and Warrior Alliance. There will also be resource information presented by the state’s veteran nursing homes and veteran cemeteries, the Georgia Department of Labor, and the AARP.

“This is a great opportunity for women veterans across the state to come together and share their personal experiences serving in the military. More importantly, it is a time to share their personal challenges and struggles faced in transitioning back into civilian life,” said Veda Brooks, Director of GDVS Women Veterans Office and coordinator of the “Life After the Military” conference.

Brooks urges all women veterans, guard, reservists, and their families whose schedule allows to come to take advantage of the valuable information and resources being offered June 7 - 8.
