GDVS Offers Assistance to Veterans Affected by ITT Closure
The decision last week by ITT Technical Educational Services, Inc. to shut down operations has unique ramifications for students who enrolled using veterans educational benefits.
Approximately 400 students were enrolled at ITT campuses in Georgia using veterans educational benefits. The Georgia Department of Veterans Service is offering assistance to those affected.
“The sudden closure of these schools puts a burden on veterans and their dependents,” said GDVS Commissioner Mike Roby. “We want to do everything possible to make sure these folks are taken care of and their education benefits are not wasted.”
The GDVS Veterans Education & Training Division has begun notifying the affected students. Each will be mailed a letter detailing their options in the wake of the closure.
Due to the sudden mid-term nature of the ITT closure, students who enrolled using veterans education benefits may be in receipt of an over-payment. Those who find themselves in this situation may request a waiver from the VA Debt Management Center.
The GDVS will offer assistance to students in this situation, as well as to those seeking to continue their education at another approved institution.

Note: Through a contractual relationship with the federal Department of Veterans Affairs, the GDVS serves as State Approving Agency (SAA) for Georgia, overseeing the approval of learning institutions for students to use veterans education benefits.
