Since their dedications, Georgia’s veteran memorial cemeteries in Glennville and Milledgeville have held annual remembrance ceremonies in honor of Georgia’s fallen sons and daughters.

On Monday, May 27, 2024, both of Georgia’s state veteran memorial cemeteries will continue this unbroken tradition as they host public Memorial Day programs to remember and honor the service and sacrifice of Georgia’s military service members and veterans.

In Glennville, cemetery director Ernie Cowart will host the cemetery’s 17th annual Memorial Day Ceremony featuring support from Fort Stewart’s 3rd Infantry Division, including a color guard. Lieutenant Colonel Melissa Hoaglin will deliver the ceremony’s keynote address.

The ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. Members of local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars chapters will close the ceremony with a flag raising in honor of all of Georgia’s fallen service members. The public is welcome and invited to tour the cemetery grounds, visit their friends and loved ones, and honor the service of all interred at the cemetery at the conclusion of the ceremony.

In Milledgeville, the ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Hosted by cemetery director Linda Lavender, this year’s ceremony will feature keynote remarks from GDVS Chief Operations Officer and retired Sergeant Major Kerry Dyer. Local musician Briana Wilson will provide patriotic music, including the National Anthem. Members of the local Knights of Columbus chapter will also join the ceremony and assist in leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members of the John Milledge Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will provide a 21-gun salute using muskets in honor of Georgia’s military service members lost over the last year.
